TECH Parenting

Week 1: Welcome to the TECH Parenting Intervention!

What children see in the media and through technology impacts their behavior. Parenting impacts how kids use media and how they interpret the messages they receive through the media.

Week 2: T – Talk to your children about their media and technology use

The more you recognize and affirm good media behavior, the less problematic media behavior there will be. The way you talk to your child and ask questions about their media use will impact how much they share with you about what they are doing through media and technology.

Week 3: E – Educate your children about risks in media and technology

Substance use marketing and other risky behaviors are seen by kids through the media, and it does impact their future behavior. Industries behind substance use promotion are very strategic about promoting the positives and hiding the negatives of substance use.

Week 4: C – Co-Use/Co-view media and technology with your children actively

Your active presence as your child uses technology will impact them positively. Being present in their online activities gives you the opportunity to show them how you would like them to behave.

Week 5: H – House Rules: Establish clear communication and expectations

Clear and effective house rules about where, when and what media is allowed will limit your child’s exposure to mature media content and reduce their risk for substance use.

Week 6: Problem solving and intervention wrap-up

When you plan for barriers that you may encounter, you will be able to overcome them. Use your resources to identify strategies that have worked for others when you need help.
