Your active presence with your child as they use technology will impact them positively.
Being present in their online activities gives you the opportunity to show them how you would like them to behave.

Week Four Home Practice

Co-use of media and technology is an important part of good media parenting. Co-use MUST be active though! You need to point out potential risks or marketing messages to your child while you are using media and technology with them. You should also model how to use privacy settings and balance media use with your child.

For home practice this week, we recommend that you schedule at least 15 minutes of co-use of media or technology with your child. During this time we ask you to prioritize these three ABC skills for active co-use:

  1. Ask an open-ended question about their experience.
    • What do you like about this (website, app, game)?
    • Show me how you use this (website, app, game).
    • What would you do if you saw something like an alcohol ad on this (website, app, game)?
  2. Be engaged with your child the entire time, looking for opportunities to educate them.
  3. Communicate in positive ways to promote your child’s comfort in using technology with you!
    • I love how you are sharing your knowledge with me!
    • Wow, you know a lot about this (website, app, game)!
    • I like how careful you are about your privacy on this (website, app, game)!
    • I had so much fun using this (website, app, game) with you! I hope we can do it again sometime soon!

I will co-use media/technology with my child for 15 minutes:
