Week Five - House Rules

  1. Review
  2. Video
  3. Activity
  4. Home Practice

Establish clear communication and expectations.
Clear and effective house rules about where, when and what media is allowed will limit your child’s exposure to mature media content and reduce their risk for substance use.

Week Four Review

Last week we encouraged you to practice active Co-Use of media and technology with your child. We asked you to spend 15 minutes practicing the A, B, C skills for active co-use. These were:

  1. Ask an open-ended question about their experience.
  2. Be engaged with your child the entire time, looking for opportunities to educate them.
  3. Communicate in positive ways to promote your child’s comfort in using technology with you!

Which of these things did you notice as you were active with your child around media and technology use?

Now that you have set a solid foundation of positive communication skills around media and technology use, we will guide you towards setting effective house rules for media and technology use in your home (Your Home Media Plan). Keep in mind, effective house rules work best in the context of a warm and supportive parent-child relationship. Use of open-ended questions, non-judgment, and reflective listening will help you and your child develop a solid home media plan.
