The more you recognize and affirm good media behavior, the less problematic media behavior there will be. The way you talk to your child and ask questions about their media use will impact how much they share with you about what they are doing through media and technology.

3. Use affirming and reflective listening skills

Affirmations are one of the most powerful tools we have as parents, yet we don’t use them nearly enough! Reflective listening shows our child that we are really hearing their perspective and care enough to listen to their ideas. Read the comics below to see how these communication tools can result in a very different conversation about media and technology when used in an effective way!

It’s easy to forget to use affirmations or to reflect back what you are hearing to your child. Here are a few starters you can try to help prompt you to use these important communication tools:
